International Nurses Day: Honouring Everyday Heroes

Every May 12, the world celebrates International Nurses Day. The occasion highlights the important role nurses play in healthcare and in supporting patients every day.

In hospitals, clinics and health centres, nurses are present at every stage of patient care. They provide treatment, monitor patients’ conditions, comfort families and often work under demanding conditions. Their dedication makes them an essential part of the healthcare system.

International Nurses Day is celebrated in honour of Florence Nightingale, known as the founder of modern nursing. Born on May 12, 1820, she transformed healthcare practices through better hygiene and improved organisation of medical care.

The day also serves as a reminder of the many challenges nurses face, including heavy workloads, lack of equipment, long working hours and the need for greater professional recognition. Despite these difficulties, nurses continue to serve with commitment, compassion and professionalism.

Around the world, several activities are organised to mark the celebration, including awareness campaigns, tribute ceremonies, conferences and messages of appreciation for healthcare workers.

International Nurses Day is therefore an opportunity to recognise the vital contribution of nurses and to encourage greater support and appreciation for their work in society.
