CHU of Yaounde Launches Free Screening Campaign Against Hypertension and Diabetes

As cases of hypertension and diabetes continue to rise in Cameroon, the CHU of Yaounde is launching a free screening campaign from May 13 to 18, 2026, to encourage early detection and better prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

In response to the growing number of cardiovascular and metabolic diseases in Cameroon, the University Hospital Centre of Yaounde (CHU) will organize a week of free medical screening from May 13 to 18, 2026. The campaign aims to raise awareness about hypertension and diabetes while offering accessible healthcare services to the population.

The initiative was officially launched by Professor Vincent de Paul Djientcheu, Director General of the CHU of Yaounde, during activities marking World Hypertension Day. According to hospital authorities, hypertension has become a major public health concern in Cameroon because many people live with the disease without knowing it until serious complications appear.

Throughout the campaign, citizens will benefit from free medical examinations focused on major cardiovascular risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity, and urinary disorders. Specialists in cardiology, diabetology, nephrology, and ophthalmology will also provide consultations and medical advice.

Beyond screening, the campaign will include health education sessions aimed at helping patients better understand risk factors, possible complications, and the importance of proper daily management of these illnesses. Organisers say prevention remains one of the most effective ways to reduce deaths linked to cardiovascular diseases.

Physical activities adapted to participants will equally be organised during the week alongside scientific discussions bringing together healthcare professionals. The objective is not only to treat patients but also to encourage healthier lifestyles and strengthen prevention efforts within communities.

The CHU of Yaoundé hopes this initiative will encourage more Cameroonians to regularly check their health status and take early action against silent diseases such as hypertension and diabetes, which continue to affect many families across the country.
